Yikes – I Said the Word FAT!

When I first started talking about creating a website celebrating and supporting overweight women who run, I got a lot of mixed reactions. Every one of the reactions related to my use of the word fat. Most of the reactions were incredibly positive. Women laughed, nodded, and frequently said “I can so relate to that!!” Others (often those who work in the fitness industry) nodded and said that they were glad I was owing the word and treating it like it is – a simple descriptor. Then there were a few who were appalled and thought I was putting a negative connotation on the site. I completely disagree with the negative opinions and it was encouraging that they were in the minority.

The truth is the word fat often sparks a reaction in us. Part of this reaction may come from how we think the world sees us – and the fear that they are using the word to speak negatively about us. Another part of the reaction likely comes from how we talk to ourselves. How often have you engaged in negative self-talk and used the word fat as a negative descriptor? Often the pressure and shame we put on ourselves in much worse than what anyone else is saying.

I decided to take the word and own it. Hi – I’m Stacey, I’m a fat girl and I love to run.

Far too often I see misconceptions that overweight people are lazy, or that they can’t enjoy sports as other, thinner people can. This is simply not true. Like anyone who enjoys sports and activities, fat people have to be sure that the activities they are undertaking fit their current body and lifestyle. For those who are brand new to exercise and running you should speak to your doctor before you start. If you take the time to ensure you are participating in your activities safely and healthily, I don’t think there is any reason why a fat person cannot be just as active as a thin person. My personal experiences have taught me that.

For a person who is overweight, there are some specific considerations they need to take into account with their running. Workout wear must be chosen carefully, shoes need a bit more cushioning, and you need to make sure that you are exercising at a level and intensity that is healthy for your body.

Owning the word fat and celebrating myself and all of the other fat girls out there who love to run or would like to start a running program is why I created this website. This site will talk about the highs and lows of being a fat runner. It will include reviews of gear with the needs of larger women in mind. It will have a section where I document my progress and the highs and lows that go with it. It will have motivational posts and conversations. And most importantly of all, it will be a safe space for other overweight runners to come to connect with others, share their thoughts and experiences, and hopefully find a lot of helpful information.

I encourage you to take a moment to quietly reflect on your feelings around the word fat. Say it out loud to yourself. Does it make you uncomfortable? Do you feel shame or embarrassment when you say it out loud? If so you are not alone! I have been there and so have millions of others. I hope that by joining us here on this site you will find the motivation and positivity to turn those feelings around and embrace all that you can do – whatever your body looks like.
